Marks & Spencer Beauty Hall | Haul & Review

If you’ve been following my blog recently or seen the videos I’ve posted on Facebook, you will no doubt have seen that quite a few products that I’ve talked about have come from the M&S beauty department!

Over the last couple of years they have really upped their beauty game and are stocking some fab brands, giving them a real point of difference when up against the likes of Boots and big department store beauty halls!

I wanted to a bit of a review on the beauty hall in general but also to give a special shout out to the Shrewsbury store.

Essentially the M&S beauty hall is a self selection department – however they do now have specialist consultants to cover all of the brands sold. (Having worked on counters for many years, it’s hard enough knowing one brands products in and out, let alone multiple ones!)  Generally this can give the best of both worlds for customers. Opportunity to browse without feeling overwhelmed by staff, but also an expert on hand to advise when you need it.

I feel that M&S have really considered which brands they want to feature, and stayed in line with their modern demographic of customers. They haven’t chosen any brands that you can get in the majority of department stores (possibly some cross over with Selfridges, but they are only in 3 cities), and they are all somewhere between drugstore and luxury brands, so the quality of products is certainly very reliable.

Ranges like Pixi, REN, Diego Della Palma, Rosie for Autograph, GlamGlow, Percy & Reed, and Emma Hardie are all making subtle splashes in the beauty ocean at the moment, but when you’re up against beauty giants like Estée Lauder, MAC, Loreal etc, I think it’s brilliant that M&S are carving their own way in such a booming industry.

The reason I wanted to go to the M&S beauty hall was for Pixi. I live in Telford and it hasn’t appeared there, so one afternoon whilst I was in Shrewsbury I popped in – and am I glad I did! The assistant told me she had just taken delivery of the range so if I wanted to see it she’d have to wheel the box onto the shopfloor. We both had a good rummage through and just chatted about how amazing we had heard the range was! I left with the products I wanted plus a cheeky little free gift because I’d bought a couple of things. 🙂

A few months later I was given some vouchers to spend in M&S and so had my mom. I knew exactly where we were headed! The young lady who served me last time was there, Laura, and she was so helpful again – she wouldn’t have remembered me, but I remembered her! Her knowledge of the ranges and products was second to none! My mom is hard to impress and she said how good Laura was! 😄

Some M&S stores don’t get all of the ranges of products, and that then means that the consultants aren’t all then trained in the same way by all of the brands, which I think is a bit of a shame, but I can safely say I think M&S have well and truly put themselves on the beauty map in the last few years, and I hope will only get better!

If you’d like to see what I’ve purchased from the M&S beauty hall, take a look at my video below!

April Favourites

The clue to this post is in the title! The products I’ve been reaching for all month!

ROSIE FOR AUTOGRAPH MAGIC RADIANCE CREAM

A dupe for the Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow cream, this feel amazing on the skin and a pea size amount really goes such a long way! Skin feels hydrated, smoothed and prepped for foundation, but can also be mixed with foundation to give a more dewy look. I’ve even thought it would work beautifully on its own in the summer for a really beautiful natural glow, without any coverage. Great for dry skins who are finding their foundation is drying their skin more.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY ICONIC NUDE LIP CHEAT LIP PENCIL

The lip pencil that changed my perspective on lip pencils! I’ve be totally converted to lip pencils since I bought this. The ‘perfect nude’ for pretty much everyone, long lasting, and non drying. Looks great on its own as well as under lippy! Adding more of these to my wishlist right now!!

CHARLOTTE TILBURY BITCH PERFECT K.I.S.S.I.N.G LIPSTICK

I did a post a couple of weeks ago about my ‘nude’ lipstick collection, this is an absolute staple for me now! A great nude that isn’t too brown. Looks fab with a super smokey eye and equally chic with neutral look too! And the packaging is so luxurious, I love taking it out of my bag on a night out!

CHARLOTTE TILBURY THE DOLCE VITA EYE PALETTE

An unusual shade choice for me, but I totally fell in love with the ‘look’ on the CT counter in Birmingham. When I had my makeover done I knew I couldn’t leave without this in my possession, and I’ve not regretted it at all! I reach for it days and evenings alike and am loving the versatility of the shades! The quality of the shadows and especially the glitter are a dream to blend and never budge while worn!

LIZ EARLE CLEANSE & POLISH HOT CLOTH CLEANSER

This has made me love the ritual of cleansing. I use this as my second cleanse and massage and breathe in the beautiful aromatic scent as I’m doing it. It’s extremely gentle, even around the eyes, and I always feel squeaky clean when using the muslin cloth to remove the last traces of markup and dirt from the day.

PIXI GLOW TONIC

This has been part of my routine since Christmas and I love it. I confess I never used to tone – I was too lazy – even though I knew exactly how important it was to my skincare and how it worked, but since adding this to my routine I am religious with it!  I put it down to this that my skin feels so soft and smooth every day. The odd blemish that appears is still a bit stubborn to remove, but this is doing a great maintenance job on my skin, and with it containing glycolic acid, it’s boosting cell renewal to keep my skin younger and fresher looking for longer! A great addition to any routine at any age!

Cleansers: The current line-up

Following my previous post – The Importance of a Good Cleansing Routine – I thought I’d review the current crop of cleansers that are frequenting my bathroom cabinet!

Since starting to double cleanse at night, I’ve found that when I tone I often don’t have anything left on the cotton pad! My skin feels like it absorbs my next products better and I do feel my skin is in a much better and balanced state since being more religious with my cleansing.

Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser with Cottonseed

OMG, my Holy Grail cleanser. It’s as simple as that. Ive used this cleanser pretty much non-stop for about 6 percent years. It’s soft on my skin, but so effective at melting my makeup. I’m a recent convert to Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation, and y’all know that doesn’t budge! This, though gently breaks down my full cover and my layers of mascara. I’m sold for life!

Botanics Hot Cloth Cleansing Balm

I have used other cleansing balms before but had never got round to repurchasing. When in Boots one day it was 3 for 2 on skincare so I decided to pick this up and give it a go! I’m a sucker for a spa-like scent and this has got just that! I use this as my second cleanse, or when I’ve had a makeup free day. It melts to a rich oil texture as massaged into the skin, and instantly relaxes me as I use it. I don’t use the muslin cloth included, as I prefer a flannel mitt but I always feel completely clean after using. I find I need the flannel texture to get the oily residue off my skin post cleanse, so this probably isn’t best for an oily skin, but for my dry and dehydrated skin it’s amazing!

Bobbi Brown Cleansing Oil   I caved a few months ago and ordered this to see what the fuss was about with cleansing oils. Again, I use this as my second cleanse onto dry skin to make sure the last bits of makeup have been removed. It’s gentle, but I’m not a huge fan of the smell. I imagined it to be more herbal from the description but it’s quite plain. I like that this can be removed just with water, it emulsifies and changes to a milky texture so comes off the skin very easily. I’ve enjoyed using it, but wouldn’t repurchase.

Estée Lauder Perfectly Clean Face Wash and Refiner  I often keep this one in the shower to use in a morning if I’ve used the Cleansing Balm first. It really removes all the last traces of the cleansing balm, and makes my skin squeaky clean and with its really gentle small beads, it softens and brightens the skin for that perfect prep for my next products. It’s a gel so is fab at purifying an oily skin, but is gentle enough for other skin types to use as a gentle scrub a couple of times a week.

Urban Decay Makeup Meltdown  This is a pre-cleanse product that melts your foundation and makeup away from the skin by gently breaking down all traces of makeup before you follow with your cleanser. You can also use it as a quick mask before you’re due to go out! All its goodness plumps and brightens the skin so you’ve got a great base to put your makeup onto!

I still have a bit of a wish list of cleansers to try so watch this space for some updates!

The Importance of a Good Cleansing Routine | The Beauty Spot

For a long time I was very lazy in the cleansing department. I would skip toner more than I’d use it, and often would only wash/cleanse once at night. I trained as a beauty therapist and have worked in high end beauty for 7 years and I would still confess to lacking in the cleansing area of my routine. *the shame!*

In June 2014 I started treatment for acne and became much more aware of the fact that if I was putting treatment gel on my face for spots and scarring, it needed to be on completely clean skin, otherwise how was it going to work if bits of foundation were still there?!

And so I began double cleansing. This makes so much sense I couldn’t believe I had never really done it before!

Think about your evening cleansing routine in two sections, especially if you wear makeup.  You need to remove the makeup first, before cleansing and balancing the skin. So just using wipes – for example – to take the makeup off is not going to cut it, because bits of foundation can quite easily be left behind. I think wipes are great for quick fix after a night out when you are a little worse for wear, but if you think about it, all you’re doing is eventually moving the grime around your face when the wipe is full and dirty.

The other thing with wipes is that if you’re wearing a medium/full coverage foundation, you will most probably have wipe the skin a lot in order to remove it and that can feel rough and irritate. So having a makeup removing product and cleansing product is the way to go!

Some cleansers are effective enough at breaking down makeup (probably depends on your makeup too though!) but for me I’ve been finding that using two separate products have really done the trick.  I’ll follow up with specific products that are currently in my bathroom, but especially during my acne treatment, I was loving the soothing element of oils and balms as my second cleanse. Because my treatment gel was harsh and uncomfortable on my skin, I was finding that a couple of minutes spent slowly massaging my skin with a gentle product was good for settling my mind before bed and was soothing my skin before applying the gel.

The best thing about a good cleansing routine, is that when your skin is squeaky clean, your following products will all work much more effectively! And if you invest good money in your serum/oil/moisturiser you want to know it can work how it’s supposed to; ceansing is the where that starts!

With any routine, its about finding what works for you and since December when I finished my treatment, I’ve continued with this, and my skin seems to be loving it!

What cleansing or makeup removing products do you swear by?
